Your Page TitleFONT color=#ffffff>We Spark Imaginative Learning after school! These fun science activities are typically held after classes and last from 6 to 8 weeks. Our educational and entertaining classes take place at the school and parents pay a low, all-inclusive fee, with no cost to the school. During every hour-long session, the children will create and take home an item related to the topic like model rockets, periscopes and Mad Science putty, just to name a few.
Through the course of this series, children will witness amazing chemical reactions between acids and bases and the making (and breaking) of molecules. Your Mad Scientists will experiment with gravity and balance, puzzles, explore the incredible properties of dry ice, build their very own rocket, and learn the fundamentals of model rocketry, including the launch of their rocket. Finally, they will investigate the "secrets" of slime and dinosaurs!
Classes included in the series:
Puzzle Mania Explore the scientific method through the use of 2 and 3 dimensional puzzles. Hear the legend of the ancient Chinese tangram and make the moving piece puzzle to take home. Mystery of the Secret Slime Who dunnit? Use your detective skills to figure out which Mad Scientist made the amazing secret slime! Make your own oozing batch to take home! Acids & Bases Uncover the world of acids and bases that affect us every day. Learn about safe and unsafe chemicals and the proper way to handle them. Use color changing solutions to detect levels of acidity, make a fire extinguisher and a “Canister Cannon”. Dry Ice Explore the 3 states of matter. Turn water to ice in 30 seconds, build a giant bubbling potion, carbonate plain drinking water and create the same awesome smoke illusions used in the movies. Gravity & Balance How keen is your sense of balance? Learn how your body controls balance. Test your center of gravity through various experiments and activities. Make a balancing bird that swoops down on a string. Dinosaurs Revisit a perennial favorite…with a slightly different twist. Learn how paleontologists determine the shapes, sizes and habits of dinosaurs from fossil remains. Participate in a mini dino-dig and take home your own T-Rex!
Rocket Building Build and decorate your very own model rocket. A great way to investigate space flight and aerodynamics! Rocket Launch Discover the dynamics of rocket flight. Touch and feel scale rockets while learning how and why they fly. Launch your own model rocket that soars into the air and then returns to earth by parachute. Fall 2006 Series This series introduces young scientists to many exciting areas of science in the natural world. Learn about plants, flowers and fall leaves; explore aspects of the human body and discover the unseen world of microorganisms. Test your observation skills with “Science Magic”. Play detective as you solve the mystery of the secret slime and test for hidden sources of pollution. Classes included in the series:
Che-Mystery Eliminate the mystery in chemistry! Explore one of the most exciting sciences as we make substances burn, fizz and pop! Grow your own crystal garden to take home. Under Pressure Join Bernoulli and Newton as we take this exciting look at the properties of air. Use vortex generators to create air pockets, levitate ping-pong balls and streamers, play the Mad Science version of air hockey. Take home a high-flying Air Drive Rocket! Fun-Damental Forces Gravity…Inertia…Centripetal force…who could ever imagine that an introduction to physics could be so much fun? We’ll experience these awesome forces for ourselves and build some cool devices to watch them work! Current Events the world of electrical circuits. Create static electricity in a test tube to take home that day! Take a tour on the electron freeway! Conductors, insulators, transistors, and other elements in Fantastic Flyers The Wright Brothers would be proud as we follow in their footsteps and learn the fundamental principles of flight. Build many different types of stunt planes and gliders. Construct a Mad Science Sky Hawk to take home! You’ll be Top Gun after this class! Super Structures Test the strength of different shapes such as arches and triangles. Can you stand on a Dixie cup? Bet you can’t crush the egg! Create a fun magnetic structure to take home! Science Magic Magic? No…It’s science! You’ll learn the secrets behind famous magic tricks that you can recreate for yourself! . Mother nature has some tricks of her own, and we’d like to show you what’s up her sleeve!
Flower Power Learn the role of the flowers, leaves and seeds in the plant cycle. Dissect flowers and seeds and do an experiment that illustrates why leaves change color in the fall. Make a flower to take home.
Winter 2006 Series:
Mad Science and NASA are Collaborating to Educate THE NEXT GENERATION Explore the Earth, Moon, Mars and Beyond! Mad Science brings you the excitement and wonder of space in the Academy of Future Space Explorers after-school program, featuring exciting student activities from the NASA Langley Center for Distance Learning. This is an experience that is not to be missed and is truly out of this world! Our after-school program engages young minds with exciting hands-on activities and amazing demonstrations. This multi-week session of one-hour science-themed classes employ inquiry-based discussions. In every class, children build a fun and educational take-home to fuel their future explorations. Classes that are out of this world! Classes included in the 6 week series: Planets and Moons Explore the farthest reaches of our solar system and create a lunar eclipse in this “mad” planetary tour! Learn how the planets stack up. Build and take home Kepler’s Cube, a fun and educational 3-D solar system puzzle! Space Phenomena Probe the mysteries of meteors and bounce around satellite light in this phenomenal program on space events! See comets up close as one is formed before your eyes, and take home your very own Catch-a Comet! Rocket Science This is your chance to be a rocket scientist! Investigate the four forces of flight with the help of a Unique Flying Object! Explore the science involved in rocket construction as you build your very own Skyblazer II Rocket that you can take home! Space Travel Learn what it takes to be a true globetrotter! Race a balloon rocket and design your won car engine as you learn about thrust. See the principles of propulsion at work in a real rocket launch, and build your very own Shuttle Copter to fly to the skies! Space Technology Discover technology designed for outer space! Steer a laser beam through a laser maze, find hidden mountains using the principles of radar technology and discover everyday objects originally designed for use in space! Take home a Lightning Launcher that will light up the sky! Living in Space Experience the life of an astronaut as you suit up for space flight! Use teamwork to complete an important space mission, build a model space station and make your very own Cosmic Chronometer watch to measure the time here on Earth! Add these classes for the 8 week series: Atmosphere & Beyond We’re on a mission to explore the atmosphere on Earth, and beyond! Travel to the end of the rainbow and make a sunset! Mix up various planetary atmospheres, one molecule at a time! Discover how stars would look in space and see what makes stars twinkle using your very own Shimmering Stars!
